Ideas for Painting a Purple Abstract Acrylic on a Canvas

    Chromatic Haze

    • Blend the edges of various shades of purple into one another on a canvas with the brush for a simple technique that gives a single color visual interest. Blend a little white and black acrylic with the purple to change the shade. Dollop the colors across the canvas with a brush or palette knife, then spread the color allowing the colors to barely blend for two distinct shades to rest side-by-side or throughout the blend to create a new shade of purple at the intersections. This can be the finished painting or serve as the background for additional artistry.

    Acrylic Puddles

    • One of the benefits of working with acrylics is the ability to mix it with various mediums that effect the thickness and drying time of the paint. Cover the canvas with a base of purple in either a dark or light shade and then let the canvas rest on a table top. Mix purple acrylic with a pouring medium and then literately pour or drizzle the tinted mixture over the canvas. Allow the mixture to dry as it was poured, cut through it with a palette knife or brush to pull lines of color away from the puddles or repeat with a lighter or darker shade of purple. When dry, the purple acrylic will appear to have a smooth plastic-like surface because of the pouring medium.

    Expressive Oodles

    • Impasto is an acrylic painting method that uses thick layers of acrylic to give the painting texture, and often uses the palette knife for application rather than a brush. Consider adding crushed glass, small beads and plastic confetti to adorn sections of thick acrylic. Add texture to the purple acrylic paint by mixing in commercially produced texturing products or other materials such as sand, sawdust or rock dust. Stephanie Pui-Mun Law, a painter of sci-fi and fantasy art, states that the use of texture is a great way to convey motion and emotion in a painting.

    Transparent Tones

    • Just as acrylic can be thickened it can also be thinned to use as a glaze. Tint a glazing medium with different shades of the purple acrylic by including a bit of black or white to adjust the shade of purple. The glazing medium will dry clear, leaving the purple tones to appear suspended on the canvas or over other colors. Start with a dark or light toned background and build up the layers of color in patches by applying a different shade over each layer of glaze as it dries. A design can be painted on top of the glaze and more layers of glaze added as desired. This is a good technique when trying to convey a surreal or dream state within an acrylic painting.
