Reality TV That Doesn"t Quit

Reality TV can be really hit or miss, but one show that's bound to get you hooked is Obsessed, a highly personal show that follows everyday people who think they're normal - until it comes to their obsession. One episode depicts the world of a shopping addict who is over $150,000 dollars in debt yet still can't stop buying things she doesn't need, a runner who can't go a day without a 20 mile jaunt, a girl with an anxiety disorder who unconsciously nibbles on chalk whenever she feels anything other than the status quo and, most worryingly, an avid tanner who visits one tanning salon after another in her desperation to remain bleached-blonde and orange at all times.

Obsessed offers an in-depth look at the lives of those who suffer from obsessive compulsive disorders. It employs psychiatrists and physicians to talk to the show's protagonists, helping each individual to explore just why they can't live without their particular addiction. In most cases, the obsession ruining their life either psychologically or physically - and socially - and the consequences of continuing their obsessive habits are even life threatening to some.

First created in 2009, the show aims to both let viewers see into the lives of its participants - but it differs from other voyeuristic reality shows like Big Brother in the way that it also attempts to rehabilitate them. For example, the chalk-eating girl is told that the chances are she feels compelled to munch on blackboard writing items due to a deep-rooted anxiety problem and asked to search within herself for the reason she needs such a crutch in order to survive normally. The eating of chalk itself, however, doesn't appear to concern the doctor as much as her psychological problems.

The running man is told of not only the problems that will appear in his ligaments and joints following a solid 20-plus miles a day of hard training but the social dilemma as well - in the show, his girlfriend explains how lonely and ignored she feels thanks to his dedication to his goals, but all is sadly in vain as it is revealed the running man continues to run in spite of his losses - which, eventually, include his girlfriend. The tanning fanatic ends up pulling out of the show after hearing of the cancer dangers too - but there is one success in the shopaholic, who ends up learning several deep-rooted truths herself and starts out on the path to recovery.

Obsessed is a show that is both fascinating and compelling - and is surely available on Sky offers. Just be sure you don't end up addicted to it or you could be the next star!
