- 1). Cut the plastic drinking straw with scissors so it is 5 inches tall. This will support the fondant tree trunk. Work the brown fondant in your hands to warm it up. This will make it easier to mold.
- 2). Cover the entire straw with the brown fondant except 1 inch at the bottom. You will insert this end into the cake. Be sure the straw is completely covered evenly.
- 3). Roll out the green fondant until it is 1/4-inch thick and a 12-by-12-inch square. Use a petal cutter from a cake decorating set, available from specialty cake supply stores. Cut out 12 petals for the tree's leaves.
- 4). Brush gum paste glue over the entire trunk of the tree with an artist's fine brush. Bend up each rounded edge of the petals you just cut. Press the pointed end into the side of the tree trunk approximately one-third from the bottom. The bottom of the tree is just above the straw that is sticking out.
- 5). Press another petal leaf next to the first leaf. Add two more so that there are four leaves in this first row. Press four petal leaves on the row above the first row, but start between two petal leaves so the leaves overlap.
- 6). Repeat until the entire tree is covered in rows of petal leaves. Pinch the top of the tree to create a point and insert the straw section of the tree trunk into the cake.
