Man-Free/Cover 1
Also called Cover 1, man-free secondary coverage places the cornerbacks and linebackers in man-to-man coverage while the safety is in deep zone coverage.
2x2 Formation
This means there are two receivers to each side of the offensive line. There can be two wide receivers and two slot receivers, or there can be a wide receiver and slot receiver to one side, with a tight end and a flanker to the other side.
Slot Receiver Clear the Way
Having the back side slot receiver run a deep pass route will force the outside linebacker to follow in pass coverage.
X- Sit Route
With the hook/curl area vacated by the outside linebacker, the back side receiver will run a short slant-and-sit route to the inside. The depth of the route is six-to- eight yards.
Strong Side Pass Routes
- The tight end runs a delayed three-yard out route.
- The flanker will run a slant pattern.
Running Back
The running back has blitz pick-up responsibility, and then flares out for the outlet pass.
5-Step Pass Game
This play requires a five step drop for the quarterback. Out of the shotgun formation the quarterback with take two steps back and throw the ball.
Coaching Points
- If the outside linebacker does not follow the slot receiver deep, instruct the quarterback to throw to the running back.
- This is a perfect first down pass if there is not a blitz.
- Install a quarterback draw to the strong side as a complimentary run play.
