- 1). Collect seeds from seed pods of previously bloomed poinsettia plants. This may be the easiest way to find the seeds since they can be difficult to find for purchase separately.
- 2). Dry out the seed pods entirely by placing in a cool dry place inside a paper bag or mesh breathable bag. It is not uncommon for the seeds to burst right out of the seed pods when ready, so make sure that if you are storing them in a mesh bag the holes in the mesh are very small.
- 3). Fill your small growing containers with potting soil. Make sure your containers have a drain hole in the bottom so that they can properly drain and don't become waterlogged.
- 4). Plant each seed in its own small starter container, about a half-inch below the surface of the soil. Pat the soil down over top of it and water so that the soil is moistened.
- 5). Place the seedlings in an area of your greenhouse or home that gets partial sunlight. Water often so that the soil stays moist but not drenched. Within two to three weeks you should start to see some green growth.
- 6). Watch for buds approximately two to four months after a full stalk has grown. Once they flower, the blooms will stay open for quite some time, in some cases for a month or more.
