How to Make Chalkboard Chalk

    Making Cylindrical Molds

    • 1). Cut a toilet paper tube in half. Using sharp scissors or an exacto knife, cut the toilet paper tube down the length of the tube on one side, and repeat on the other side. You should have two open halves of the tube. Using wax paper will allow you to reuse a mold, but cut several tubes so you can make more than two pieces of chalk at a time.

    • 2). Trim pieces of wax paper slightly larger than the size of the tube halves. Place the wax paper on the inside of the tube folding the excess over to the outside edge. Tape the edges down. Make sure the wax paper is flush against the tube. By changing out the wax paper after each use, you can reuse the mold. If you don't want to hassle with the wax paper, use the mold without it, but the mold won't be reusable.

    • 3). Roll each tube into a cylinder with the wax paper inside. Adjust the width to the size (diameter) you'd like for the chalk. Tape the seam closed with masking tape. You should now have a long cylinder tube lined with wax paper.

    Making Chalk

    • 1). Fill a full size paper cup 3/4th of the way with water, add several spoonfuls of Plaster of Paris to the water and stir. The chalk should be the consistency of runny pancake batter. If needed, add more Plaster of Paris.

    • 2). Add tempura paint if you'd like color. The more you add, the darker the color will turn out. Start by adding just a few drops of paint; add more if you want a darker shade.

    • 3). Put the cylindrical molds into a paper cup or tin can to hold them in place. Because of its straight sides, a tin can is the best option.

    • 4). Pour the chalk mixture into the molds. If you're using the cylindrical molds, tap the cup or the can with the molds on the counter to remove air bubbles, and fill the molds with the mixture. If you're using other molds, tap them on the counter to remove air bubbles.

    • 5). Let dry overnight. Once dry, remove the chalk from the molds. Peel the tape off the cylindrical molds and unroll the chalk. Discard the wax paper, and save the cardboard tubes for another time.
