- 1). Fully charge your iPod, either by using the USB wall adapter or by plugging it into your computer. If the battery fails to charge at all using these methods, you likely need to replace it.
- 2). Open Apple's iTunes music software.
- 3). Import a CD into iTunes. Using the iTunes MP3 encoder, set the sound quality to 160 kbps and create a playlist of the CD.
- 4). Copy the playlist for the CD onto your iPod.
- 5). Eject the iPod and disconnect it from your computer.
- 6). Access the iPod's main menu, and select "Settings."
- 7). Adjust the iPod's settings. Set "Repeat" to "All" and turn off the backlight.
- 8). Select the playlist you created in Step 3 and press the "Play" button. Set the volume to midrange.
- 9). Note the time and allow the iPod to continue playing music. Once the battery runs out, note that time too, and figure out the amount of time that has passed.

Compare the actual playback time of the iPod to the ideal playback time. The ideal playback time varies by iPod model. For the iPod touch, you should get between 20-36 hours of playback. The iPod nano should get between 14-24 hours, while the iPod Classic should get 30-40 hours of continuous playback. If the amount of playback you get is drastically below these numbers, your iPod battery may be bad and may need to be replaced, assuming that the battery life is insufficient for your needs.
