Propylene glycol acts as a humectant in many products. A humectant retains moisture in products and keeps them from drying out. The ingredient is used in many chewing gums, chewy dog foods and even in cookies and candy. The chemical compound keeps products fresh and extends their shelf life. - Propylene glycol is used in many soft drinks as an emulsifier or dispersant. Emulsifiers form a layer around oils in order to protect the oil from gathering together in clumps. This keeps the liquid dispersed into droplets and preserves the mixture.
