Woodworking jobs usually involve lots of marking and measuring tasks.
Different tools are used for the purpose and accuracy is the key.
While dealing with woodworking, accuracy should not be neglected.
Any negligence in this regard will not be ironed out later.
It important to check the marked points twice before continue your work.
A littler careful attitude will keep you safe from the hectic modification and measurement again.
The tools used to mark the wood for cuts, joints, and holes are pencil, a knife and a pin attached with a gauge.
There are certain gauges also which are used to mark the wood.
A well sharp hard pencil (2H) is useful to mark the cutting line on the wood.
However, pencils are not limited to mark the cutting lines; they can be used for marking different marks which help you in your task.
For instance, you can use pencils to mark the holes, or edges or joints to be joined and a part of a wood to be cut away.
It is better to have small range of pencils having different colors to mark the certain points.
Marking system can be helpful to ease your task.
You can devise your own marking system but with the compulsion that each mark always express the same meaning.
Your marking system can be something like: -An arrow represents the side of line for cutting -Colored crosshatching marks representing the areas which are to be cut completely.
-Penciled letters to represent the joints like A-A, B-B etc.
-Words representing the position of the timber like top, bottom, edge etc.
You have to be clear enough about these marks in mind so that you will not get confused during the final task.
These marks can easily be removed with the introduction of polish or varnish on the timber.
A marking knife is also used to mark the wood.
It has the tendency to mark closer to the rule or straight line than a pencil.
It works by cutting surface fibers of the timber.
Cutting the surface enable you to cut the timber without chipping the surface, especially if you are cutting with a sw.
same goes for cutting the veneered chipboard.
Certain marking knife has a riveted hardwood handle with forged carbon steel blade, which is angled to make the task easy.
Trimming knife can be used as alternative of marking knife.
Dividing Distances Marking is also important to divide the distances on the timber.
You can simply use ruler or divider to divide the distances.
Set the divider against the ruler at a certain measurement and work your way across the material in a turning motion.
Mark the points at a desired distance.
For instance, if you have a board of width 67mm and you want to divide it in four equal parts.
Place the ruler across the board with its zero ends placed on one side and the 100mm end placed on the other side.
Mark the points against the ruler reading 25mm, 50mm and 75mm to get four equal parts.
