How to Draw Pictures of Gray Wolves

    • 1). Find a number of good photos of gray wolves. A side view of gray timberwolf walking on snow would make for good contrast. Select one that has sufficient detail and gives you a clear view of the head of the wolf. Use additional images with closer shots if necessary. Set up your drawing area and place the image beside you so you can easily refer to it.

    • 2). Draw a line near the bottom of the paper to indicate where the wolf is standing. Measure the length of the wolf and mark it on the line as a reference. Plot the position of the feet along this line as well. Measure the height along the top of the wolf and make enough points so you can later connect them. Continue measuring the underside of the wolf including the head, neck, belly, legs and tail. Plot the position of the eyes, nose and ears of the wolf.

    • 3). Draw a line to connect the dots you have plotted to complete the outline of the wolf. Clearly outline the legs as they are positioned in the photo. Detail the eyes, nose and ears. Note that the fur is generally darker along the top half of the wolf. Use light, short strokes to detail the fur, especially in the neck and tail area. Leave enough highlights to create the variety of shades in the black area. Continue adding fur lines in the direction that it is growing on the wolf.

    • 4). Add lighter lines as you move lower on the wolf. Keep the underside and the inside of the legs nearly white. Detail the thick tail and the furry neck. Detail the feet and draw them exactly how they are on the image to preserve the natural look of the wolf.

    • 5). Erase any areas that may be too dark and re-draw the fur. Add the different shades of fur in layers to achieve a realistic look. Use your finger to slightly blend certain areas on the wolf.

    • 6). Add more detail lines until you are satisfied with the way it looks.
