- Tumeric is a yellow spice grown in India and is a member of the ginger family. When the root is ground, it forms a fine powder, effective for both killing ants and repelling them from the home. Sprinkle tumeric powder on the ants in the infested area, on the ant trail and into the crevices where the ants live. After three to four days of treatment, the powder should eliminate the ants.
- A solution of vinegar and water will kill ants and keep them from returning. Add one cup of white vinegar to a gallon of water, apply it to surfaces the ants frequent, and pour the solution on ant mounds. If you place the solution into a spray bottle, you can spray it into crevices where the ants live. The solution kills the ants, and the surviving ants are repelled by the smell.
- Pour boiling water on anthills, into the crevices where ants live and on ant trails. The heated water instantly kills the ants and the surviving ants retreat and will relocate to another area. Repeat this method in areas that ants frequent, and eventually, they will leave.
- Diatomaceous earth is a naturally occurring, nontoxic mineral that is easily crumbled into a powder and acts as an effective ant repellent. Sprinkle the powder on anthills and in other areas where ants have appeared.
- Soak tobacco leaves in a bowl of warm water overnight. The tobacco essence will seep from the leaves and remain in the water. The following morning, remove the leaves from the water and discard them. Pour the water in infested areas and on the anthill. The tobacco water will instantly kill the ants.
- Once the ants have been killed or displaced, seal up any crevices or cracks where the ants lived. You should also move any items that attract ants, such as food items, pet food and certain plants like peonies and roses, away from windows and doors and trim low-hanging tree branches to prevent ants from invading your home.
