• A point and shoot camera is named that because that is how the camera functions: You just point it at the subject and shoot a picture--no shutter speeds or lens opening settings to worry about. When it is turned on, the lens automatically comes out and whatever the lens sees is what the photographer sees on the LCD screen. When the shutter is pressed, the image is captured and processed by the camera. Usually, a point and shoot camera works using all automatic settings to make it easy for the photographer.

• The simple photo taking technology allows point and shoot cameras to be considerably smaller than an SLR camera. Some point and shoot cameras can fit in a pocket comfortably while some are even as small and as thin as credit card. Keychain point and shoot cameras are some of the smallest, but they do not feature an LCD preview.

• One of the best parts of owning a point and shoot camera is the different options that the camera has. Many point and shoot digital cameras allow videos to be recorded as well. Point and shoot cameras cost a lot less than SLR cameras as well. Cameras can be purchased for under $100 in some cases.
  
  

Considerations

• Point and shoot cameras do have some downfalls. The cameras are not ideal in low light situations, sporting events, concerts, or when you need to use a large zoom. The cameras do not snap pictures as soon as you press the button as SLR cameras do, and it can take nearly 5 seconds before you can take a new picture.

• Some of the most popular point and shoot cameras are made by Canon and Nikon. Canon has the Powershot series while Nikon offers the Coolpix series. Other popular companies with point and shoot cameras are Sony, Fujifilm, and Pentax.
