Adult bedwetting is serious problem for many older people. Usually bedwetting is only considered a problem with children but adult bedwetting affects 2% of the adult population. Not only is it embarrassing but it also reduces the amount of rest that you get every night.
Adult bedwetting, or nocturnal enuresis, is often found in people who have problems with urine control during the day. The causes vary from hereditary to urological disorders.
The hormone anti-diuretic or ADH sends the kidney a message that it is time to empty the bladder. Folks who have nocturnal enuresis are lacking in this hormone causing an excessive amount of urine that in turn leads to bedwetting.
Another possible reason for bedwetting is a smaller bladder. When the bladder is full, which can occur frequently with a smaller bladder, the detrusor muscle is unable to relax which in turn causes bedwetting or nocturnal enuresis. Alcohol and caffeine, which are bladder irritants, can also be factors in bedwetting.
Adult bedwetting can also be caused by more sinister health reasons like bladder cancer, prostate cancer and diabetes. So it is always important to check with your doctor if you do start to wet your bed at night.
There are things that you can do to minimize the problem or eliminate it. Eliminate or cut down on the amount alcohol or drinks with caffeine in them before going to bed. Try to limit or cut out any drinking before you go to bed. Exercising the pelvic region also helps strengthen the muscles that are used to void the bladder. Also check with your doctor about any medication that can be prescribed to help with adult bedwetting.
