- 1). Put your mail on hold an extra day so you don't open the door to a pile of junk mail and bills. Also let your friends and family know you'll be away so your voice mail won't be filled with worried calls or your email filled to overflowing.
- 2). Throw away all leftovers and any food that will spoil so you won't come home to a nasty smell when you first open the fridge. Have a bottle of your favorite drink in the fridge for a return treat.
- 3). Take the trash and recycling out to the curb even if they won't be picked up for a few days. Ask one of your neighbors to bring them to the back or side of your house once the trash has been picked up and promise you'll return the favor.
- 4). Water your inside plants. Saturate the soil. Create your own mini greenhouse effect by tying plastic grocery bags over them to maximize the moisture. Pierce a hole through the top and move away from direct sunlight.
- 5). Set aside one outfit for yourself and the kids so you don't have to scramble through suitcases to find something to wear or do laundry for the next day, especially if you are going immediately back to school and work.
- 6). Put fresh sheets on your bed and clean towels in the bathroom to welcome you back home.
- 7). Stash your favorite takeout menu in the car or save the number in your cell phone so you can order lunch or dinner from the road and have it ready when you arrive.
