- 1). Consider the reason you went to a larger tire. If you changed to a larger tire to be able to handle more weight, then you will adjust your tire based on the maximum pressure located on the sidewall of the tire. Some trucks come with a low ply rating, and a change in tire size can improve the maximum weight the vehicle can handle.
- 2). Write down the recommended pressure on your vehicle. You will normally find it on the driver's door jamb or the cover of the fuel tank area.
- 3). Look at the maximum pressure on your old tires and write that figure on the paper.
- 4). Write down the maximum pressure on your new tire size.
- 5). Compare the three figures that you have written down on the paper. Normally you will find that the tire pressures are very close. As a standard in the industry, if your new tire size is similar to the old tire size, you will keep the same air pressure as recommended on the vehicle. If you go to a larger tire because you are going to carry a load, then you want to use the maximum pressure recommended on the sidewall of the larger tire.
