- 1). Divide the voltage acting on the resistor by its resistance. With a voltage, for instance, of 12 volts and a resistance of 6 ohms, the equation would be 12 / 6 = 2. This is the current running through the resistor.
- 2). Square the current; in this example 2² = 4.
- 3). Multiply this answer by the resistor's resistance. For this example, that is 4 x 6 = 24. This is the power running through the resistor, measured in Watts.
