- 1). Turn off any computers connected to the router or modem. Stand in front of your modem and router. Look for visual indications of the source of the problem. For example, the modem may have an unusual blinking light.
- 2). Unplug the modem. If you have a router, unplug the router. Wait about 60 seconds. While you wait, check the connections on the back of the modem for tightness. Press the modem plug firmly into the outlet. Wait for the connection to establish. This may take up to 10 minutes. You will see a visual change in the lights on the modem when the connection is fully operational. If the connection doesn't secure, call your Internet service provider (ISP) to check for an outage in your area.
- 3). Plug in the router, if you have one. Wait for the connection to establish. Like with the modem, the lights on the front of the router change when the connection secures. If it doesn't, connect the computer to the modem with an Ethernet cord. Unplug the modem, wait 60 seconds, and plug the modem back into the outlet. Wait for the connection to secure again.
- 4). Turn on the computer. Wait for the computer to load fully. If the connection remains local only, try accessing the Internet with another computer. Successful access of the Internet by the second computer indicates that the problem lies with first computer.
- 5). Click on "Start," "All Programs," "Accessories" and "Command Prompt." In XP and older Windows OSs, choose "Run," type in "CMD" and select "Ok." Type in "ipconfig/release." After the process completes, type in "ipconfig/renew." Click the "X" to exit the window when finished. This process will renew and release your IP address.
- 6). Connect your computer to the modem directly with an Ethernet cord, and repeat Steps 1 to 3.
- 7). Disconnect your wireless adapter, if you have one. Reboot your computer, and connect the wireless adapter.
- 8). Update your Internet drivers by clicking on "Start," "Computer" and "System Properties." Select "Device Manager." Find the section called "Network Adapters," and click the plus sign next to it. Look for any red "X" or yellow exclamation points. Right-click on the adapter, and chose "Update Driver Software."
