How to Get Best Sound on iTunes Equalizer

    • 1). Launch iTunes. Open the "View" menu at the top of the screen and select "Show Equalizer." You may find it helpful to do this while playing a song.

    • 2). Place a check in the "On" box to turn the equalizer on.

    • 3). Click the drop-down menu at the top of the Equalizer window -- this menu is set to "Flat" when iTunes is first installed -- and select an item such as "Dance," "Rock" or "Pop" to cycle through the available equalizer presets. These presets automatically set the equalizer's bands to levels that tend to work well with certain musical genres. To create your own preset instead, select "Make Preset," give the preset a name and click "OK."

    • 4). Adjust the "Preamp" slider to change the overall volume of the music. The preamp can potentially overload and damage speakers if it is set too high; use this setting only if music is still too quiet after you have raised the primary volume slider in iTunes as well as your computer's master volume.

    • 5). Adjust the remaining sliders to change the audio response in iTunes across the different frequency bands. From left to right, the sliders adjust progressively higher frequency bands. The slider labeled "32," for example, adjusts the response for the deepest bass frequencies, while the "16K" slider adjusts high treble response. Be careful when raising the bass sliders, as many speakers cannot reproduce the lowest frequencies and could be damaged by too much boosting with the equalizer.

    • 6). Close the Equalizer window when you are happy with your settings.
