- Bell pepper plants require full sun in order to set fruit and flower. Plant in a location that receives at least eight hours of sunlight each day. However, maturing peppers are sensitive to full sun when combined with very hot temperatures. Exposure to the sun during the hottest part of the day may cause peppers to develop sunscald, which manifests itself as small translucent or tan spots on the fruit.
- Combine adequate light with good soil conditions. Bell peppers prefer fertile, well-drained soil and are sensitive to windy conditions. Plant peppers when soil temperatures are consistently higher than 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep soil moist, particularly when pepper fruits are setting.
- Look out for common pepper problems. Pests include aphids and thrips. Diseases include tobacco mosaic virus, verticilium and fusarium wilt, phytophtora root rot and cucumber mosaic virus.
