- 1). Clean the molding to remove any dirt or grease. Repair any cracks or holes by filling in with wood putty. Allow to dry completely.
- 2). Apply a sealer to new wood so the wood does not absorb all of the paint. Without the sealer, bold dark colors may become blotchy.
- 3). Sand all surfaces with a small electric sander using 180-grit sandpaper, to ensure good adhesion of the new paint. Vacuum the dust and use a tack cloth to remove any dust remaining on the molding. Put blue painters type next to the wall and floor to keep from getting paint in these areas.
- 4). Use a 3-inch brush to apply an acrylic primer to the molding. This will help cover any flaws in previously painted moldings. Let primer dry completely before painting.
- 5). Use a 2 ½ inch angle sash brush to paint the molding. Pour a dark color acrylic enamel into a paint tray. Load the brush with the enamel and apply to molding. Use long even strokes for a smooth surface. Add a few drops of water to the paint if it is too thick to go on smoothly.
- 6). Check around the edges to make sure the entire surface is covered. Any spot that is missed will show on the dark colors. Let the first coat dry and apply a second coat to
make dark colors more vibrant.
