List of Soft Key Buttons

    Computer Keyboards

    • Computer keyboards are where soft keys first appeared. An early example---which is still around---is the function keys. These are the "F" keys that make up the top row of keys on many computer keyboards. Originally, these keys were used in computer programs. The programmer could make the F keys mean whatever the program needs them to mean. Now the manufacturer decides on what some of the F keys mean (this can change when models change), but usually some of the F keys are left undefined so they can be used by programmers. For example, on the Apple G4 Powerbooks, the F1 and F2 keys increase and decrease the brightness of the screen. On other computers they do other things.

    Cell Phones

    • The soft keys on some cell phones are much more flexible than the F keys on computers. The keys are physical keys, but their meanings vary depending on what you are doing. For example, if you are using email, one set of labels will appear on the edge of the screen next to the keys---these labels define what the keys do. When you are answering a phone call, the labels next to these same keys have different meanings. On smart phones, both the labels and the buttons are soft. The buttons themselves appear when needed and the buttons are labeled with their function.

    ATM Machines

    • On automatic teller machine (ATM) screens the buttons appear along each side of the screen and each screen consists mainly of labels that appear alongside each soft button key. For example, when you first sign on the first two buttons are the only ones to have labels, and these labels are "checking" and "saving." When you choose one of these, the keys become relabeled with amounts (20, 40, 60, 80, etc.). What the keys mean depends on where you are in the processing tree and the buttons are defined by what labels appear at each place. This system is so universal and well understood that it is also used in information kiosks and government offices like social security offices and the department of motor vehicles.
