- 1). Type out the vodcast transcript yourself using conventional word processing tools such as Microsoft Word. Unless you are an extremely fast typist, you will likely have to pause and rewind the recording multiple times to get an accurate transcription. Use a free transcription program such as Express Scribe to provide easily hot keyed pause and rewind features. (See Resources 1)
- 2). Consider purchasing and using a transcription machine if you plan to type out many vodcast transcriptions yourself. These machines allow you to control a recording using pedals. This frees up your hands to type, improving your concentration, accuracy and speed. Purchase transcription equipment from any major office supply store or a specialized transcription retailer. Used transcription equipment is also available at online auction and sales websites.
- 3). Use speech to text software to transcribe the vodcast. This will likely have a moderate error rate although it can be improved by using high quality audio and if you can get the person speaking in the vodcast to calibrate their voice for your software. Calibration requires that the person with the voice being transcribed record a series of words and phrases to create a voice recognition profile. Correct any errors that may appear in the transcription while running the vodcast. Popular examples of this software include Dragon NaturallySpeaking and Adobe Captivate, available from any major software retailer.
- 4). Hire a transcriptionist or transcription service to transcribe the vodcast. Online services such as Amazon's Mechanical Turk can put you in touch with transcriptionists from around the world willing to work for a low price. (See Resources 2) There is a turnaround time involved in outsourcing transcription in this manner that differs depending on the workers you contract with. Expect to receive a recording back between 24 hours and seven days, depending on whether you are willing to pay for expedited service.
