- 1). Select the variety of dwarf peach tree from a local nursery or favorite garden catalog. A dwarf tree is highly recommended for planting in a container situation, as a full sized tree will not allow for mature growth of the root system for that type of tree to bear fruit. Some tree nurseries actually have trees that are bred for containers.
- 2). Choose a large container that has multiple drainage holes in the bottom. The container must have complete drainage so the plant does not become water logged when left outdoors for the spring and summer growing months.
- 3). Thoroughly clean the large 15 to 20 gallon container with a solution of water and household bleach that is mixed in a plastic bucket. Use the scrub brush and clean all of the surfaces on the container. This will ensure that no diseases are present when planting a new tree in the pot.
- 4). Flush the container with clean water and allow the container to completely dry.
- 5). Fill the bottom of the pot with the bag of round stone gravel. This medium will act as a drainage for the water so the root ball will not become soaked in any standing water.
- 6). Add one and a half bags of high quality potting soil into the large container.
- 7). Plant the dwarf peach tree into the pot and add the remaining half bag of potting soil around the tree. Be sure not to bury the graft line on the dwarf tree. The graft line is the point on the trunk where the dwarf rootstock was mated to the full sized top of the tree. If the graft line is placed under the soil, roots will form at the graft line and a full sized tree may develop.
- 8). Keep the third sack of potting mix on hand, as during the growing season soil may become dislodged or escape through the bottom drainage holes. It is not unheard of to add soil to a growing tree in a container that is placed outdoors.
- 9). Thoroughly soak the freshly planted tree with fresh water to remove any air around the roots that may have been created by the planting process. Add the recommended amount of tree fertilizer provided by the nursery. Some nurseries will provide a 1 year warranty if you use their specific type of plant nutrients.

Use the two-wheeled handcart to move the planted peach tree to a sunny location in the landscape. The cart can also be used for moving the tree in and out of the cold weather as the climate dictates.
