How to Upgrade My Compaq V2000 CPU

    • 1). Shut down your laptop and unplug all cables and/or devices. Pull the display panel closed, and flip the laptop over. Rotate the computer so the front edge is facing you.

    • 2). Slide the battery release latch to the left to disengage the battery pack from its compartment. Grasp the bottom edge of the battery and rotate the battery away from the laptop. Lift the battery pack out of its compartment in the upper left corner of the laptop.

    • 3). Remove the two Phillips-head screws securing the hard drive compartment cover in place. Remove the cover from the lower right corner of the laptop. Grasp the black tab protruding from the hard drive. Lift the hard drive out of the compartment.

    • 4). Loosen the single Phillips-head screw securing the wireless compartment cover to the center of the bottom edge of the laptop's bottom casing. Remove the compartment cover and set it aside. Disconnect the two antenna cables from the wireless card. Spread the retaining latches on each side of the wireless card. Tilt the card upward and then remove it from its compartment.

    • 5). Remove the single Phillips-head screw securing the CD/DVD drive to the left side of the laptop. Insert a small paper clip into the release hole on the face of the drive. Push the paper clip into the hole until the drive is ejected from its compartment. Remove the CD/DVD drive from the laptop. Remove all marked and unmarked screws from the laptop's bottom casing. This includes all screws located inside the hardware compartments.

    • 6). Place the laptop face up, rotate the opening edge so it is facing you and pull the display panel open as far as you can. Pry the switch cover from the laptop's upper casing with a small flathead screwdriver. The switch cover is the thin plastic strip situated between the keyboard and display assemblies.

    • 7). Remove the four Phillips-head screws from behind the top row of keyboard keys. Place the laptop face down on the laptop and disconnect its ribbon cable from the motherboard. Remove the keyboard.

    • 8). Disconnect the cables extending from each side of the display panel to the motherboard. Remove the two Phillips-head screws from each display hinge. Lift the display assembly from the laptop's base and set it aside.

    • 9). Place the laptop's base facing downward with the front edge toward you. Grasp top edge of the bottom casing just above the battery compartment. Tilt the bottom casing upward and then slide the entire bottom casing away from you to disengage it from the laptop. Remove the bottom casing from the laptop to reveal the internal contents of the laptop.

      Remove the three Phillips-head screws securing the fan assembly to the upper right corner of the motherboard. Disconnect the fan's power cable from the motherboard. Remove the fan assembly from the laptop to reveal the processor chip.

      Turn the processor's flathead locking screw counterclockwise one-half turn to disengage it from the motherboard socket. Grasp the processor chip and lift it straight up and out of the motherboard. Store the processor in a static-free plastic bag. Reverse this procedure to install the new processor and reassemble your laptop.
