- Homeowners can pay their Peoria County property taxes by electronic check, credit card, personal check, cashier's check or money order. Tax payers can also pay online at the county treasurer's website, or by calling (800) 2PAY-TAX. If paying your property taxes by phone, you will need to enter the Jurisdiction Code of 2305.
If you are paying your property taxes more than a few weeks late, you will only be able to pay with cash, certified check, cashier's check, money order or credit card. If you are paying with cash, you must go directly to the Peoria County Courthouse. Some area banks also accept cash property tax payments. To find a list of participating banks, go to the Peoria County Treasurer's website. - Property taxes in Peoria County are due twice a year in the months of June and September. Although partial payments and payment agreements are not possible, homeowners can pay the entire yearly balance prior to the June tax deadline. Individuals who choose this payment method will have satisfied their tax obligation until the following year.
- All property tax payments made after the deadline are assessed a penalty fee equal to 1.5 percent of their tax bill. This fee is assessed each month that the property tax remains unpaid. Individuals can pay their taxes late by mailing payment to the County Treasurer's Office, going to the County Treasurer's Office, paying it by phone or at a local participating bank. To avoid a late fee, the Treasurer's Office must receive payment by 5 p.m. on the deadline. Payments postmarked by the due date will also avoid penalty fees.
- It is important to pay your property taxes as soon as possible to avoid an accumulation of late fees. If the tax bill becomes seriously delinquent, you risk losing your home at the yearly November tax sale. Homeowners whose property tax payments are a delinquent by a year or more will receive final notice in October. If payment is not made in full by the specified date, the house will be included in the tax sale.
