- CrossFire combines the processing power of two graphics cards to improve the resolution, frame rate and image quality of 3D games. This technology also reduces encoding times for 3D design software, including computer animation and computer-aided drafting programs.
- AMD's ATI CrossFire technology requires two video cards of the same series to work properly. Most cards in the company's Radeon HD line support CrossFire, including the 6950, 6970 and 5970 series. This technology also requires a CrossFire-certified motherboard equipped with dual PCI Express slots and a power supply with sufficient wattage for two video cards.
- AMD has released three generations of its ATI CrossFire technology since 2005. The first version requires a DVI Y-dongle cable to connect the two video cards. The second generation uses the motherboard's PCI Express bus instead of a dongle. The third generation connects the video cards with a ribbon cable.
